The Production Company

A studio built around directors.

Baablon Studios exists to widen the reach of Brazilian authorship in world cinema: producing works, developing projects, connecting filmmakers to the international market and training the next generation.

01 / The words

The origin of a mission.

Once, in the early 2010s, in a conversation with a leading producer from São Paulo, Marcus Ligocki Jr. heard the story of a dinner the producer had once had with an American producer, at the time one of the world's foremost independent film producers. He wanted to build bridges so that Brazilian cinema would be consumed by the international market. Before he could present his plans, he heard:

“Brazil has three directors, and none of them interests me. What else do you have to offer?”

02 / What he knew

Marcus Ligocki Jr. never forgot those words. He has followed and taken part in the development of Brazilian cinema since before the Rouanet Law, Brazil's federal framework for cultural investment, and he knows how much talent this country holds. He also knows that talent, alone, does not cross borders. To be perceived nationally and internationally, a work must be conceived, produced, articulated and presented strategically - without losing the voice of the person who created it.

03 / Our response

It was from this distance between the talent that exists and the talent the world can see that Baablon's mission took shape: projecting Brazilian directors to the world. We do this through strategic production, connections and technological innovation, such as Plano Piloto, our own production management tool - which brings transparency and control, makes better use of resources and reduces risk, so that more directors can make films regularly and the fullest extent of the director's creative authorship appears as value on screen.

We disagree with the American producer who believed Brazil had only three directors. We know that Brazilian cinema is vast, plural and capable of taking the world.

04 / The founder

Filmmaking in service of a collective mission.

Marcus Ligocki Jr. is a filmmaker, screenwriter, producer, educator and cultural manager. His career moves through creation, production, training, markets and cultural diplomacy, always with one question at the centre: how to project the Brazilian director and ensure that his work is appreciated and consumed by the international market?

At Baablon, that experience appears as method: turning accumulated knowledge into structure for directors, works and productive partnerships.

Four axes

01

Produce

We develop and produce auteur features, series and documentaries, from first draft to delivery, structured for international co-productions.

02

Develop

We support the project in its most fragile stage: research, narrative structure, script versions and script analysis, always preserving the director's authorship.

03

Connect

We bring directors closer to producers, financiers, distributors, exhibitors, festivals and press, in Brazil and abroad, with clear and curated information.

04

Train

We build repertoire and practice: gatherings, mentorships and training programmes that widen the reach of a new generation of filmmakers.

How we work

The director first

Every production, technology and distribution decision exists to serve the filmmaker's vision.

Curation, not catalogue

We choose few projects at a time and commit to them to the end.

International scale

We work in Portuguese and English, with materials and processes ready for the global market.

Transparency

Clear contracts, protected data and no project exposure without the director's authorisation.

Our role in Brazilian cinema

Producing films also means strengthening the field where they begin.

Baablon's experience extends to the international projection of directors and works, the development of film policy, cultural diplomacy with Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the training of new filmmakers. These fronts are not parallel businesses: they are experience, network and institutional capacity applied to our core activity — producing films.

01

International projection

We work so that Brazilian directors and works circulate at festivals, markets and screens in Brazil and worldwide, with strategic positioning and materials prepared for international audiences.

02

Film policy

We take part in building policies and initiatives that strengthen Brazil's production environment and shorten the distance between talent and opportunity.

03

Cultural diplomacy

We work with Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs to expand connections and open paths for Brazilian cinema abroad.

04

Training

We create film courses and other training initiatives that expand repertoire, practice and opportunities for the new generation of filmmakers.

This experience returns to production as stronger relationships, stronger projects and more competitive films. Strengthening the field is how we strengthen every film we produce.

Embedded technology

Management exists to serve the work.

We develop and use in-house Plano Piloto - our own management tool for audiovisual production: transparency and control at every stage, better-used resources and less risk. That means more production value on screen, less energy spent on bureaucracy and more resources serving creation.
