Renato Barbieri

Renato Barbieri has directed films since 1985, with the short On the Other Side of Your House. His first major recognition came with Black Atlantic, On the Path of the Orishas, in 1998, a work that became a reference point in Brazil Africa relations. He went on to direct The Invention of Brasília (2001), The Lives of Maria (2005), Cora Coralina, All Her Lives (2016), Pureza (2022) and Servitude (2024), the latter on contemporary forced labor. In 2024 his documentary Tesouro Natterer won the Grand Prize at the É Tudo Verdade festival and became eligible for the Best Documentary Oscar. Across more than four decades, he has filmed in nearly every Brazilian state and in thirteen countries, always seeking stories that reveal what he calls deep Brazil.
