Iberê Carvalho

Iberê Carvalho has directed films since 2000, when the documentary Classroom Cell won the Santo André Film and Video Festival. His first fiction work, the short Citizen Suicide, about corruption, won the Best 16mm Film award at the 36th Brasília Festival of Brazilian Cinema. He also directed the shorts To Ask for Forgiveness, winner of the Best Short Film award at the 31st Havana International Film Festival, and Los Dog, awarded by Cartoon Network at the Prix Jeunesse Iberoamericano. In 2015 he directed his first feature, The Last Drive In Theater, named best Brazilian film of the year by Folha de São Paulo, awarded at the Punta del Este International Film Festival, the Rio Film Festival and with four prizes at the Gramado Film Festival, screened in Chicago and Beijing and distributed globally on Netflix. In 2022 he directed his second feature, The Friendly Man, starring Paulo Miklos, selected for the Cairo International Film Festival and the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, and awarded Best Film at the Barcelona Independent Filmmaker Award. In 2023 he directed the TV movie Maria for Rede Globo, and in 2026 he codirected, with Fernando Coimbra, the Netflix miniseries Radioactive Emergency, which debuted at number one in Brazil and reached the top ten in over 40 countries. His films weave a portrait of Brasília together with social and family tension, aiming to leave audiences recognizing themselves in the characters and still talking about it after the credits roll.
